MILLIGAN — A man arrested for smashing the front door of a convenience store with a large rock caused $700 damage for $10 dollars’ worth of merchandise, according to an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office media release.

Deputies responded to an alarm at the Sunoco Food Mart on Highway 90 in Milligan around 2:43 a.m. Sept. 19 and found the front door shattered.

Surveillance video footage showed a white male with shaggy hair and a beard, wearing blue jeans and a striped blue shirt, break the glass, grab two packs of what turned out to be Native brand cigarettes and a lighter, and run out the door.

A photo of the suspect was distributed to OCSO deputies and an off-duty deputy later spotted the suspect on the Yellow River Bridge. Beside the man was an unopened pack of Native brand cigarettes.

"When informed he was under arrest for burglary, 30-year old Eddie Mcleese said he would not have done it if the jail had not 'stolen' his cigarettes and that we should call it even,'" the report stated.

Deputies charged Mcleese with burglary, criminal mischief, and petty theft.
