CRESTVIEW — When officials broke ground on the city’s first dog park in July, they anticipated it would be open by now.
While an official opening date still has not been announced, the city hopes to be finished with their part of the project in Twin Hills Park within the next couple of weeks.
“The fencing is mainly done and there is some painting to be completed,” said Wayne Steele, Director of Public Services. “The last thing we have is to install the lighting.”
April Meier, a member of the Main Street Crestview Association, headed up the project when it began in 2016.
“I did a poll to see if anyone would be interested in a dog park,” said Meier. “A lot of people said yes, so I brought it to the city council.”
The council said it did not have the funding for the project at the time, so Meier organized a fundraiser and was able to get the funding. Ninety percent of the dog park's construction came through private citizens.
Once the city is finished with its part, the remaining construction will involve installing equipment and amenities that include water stations and benches.
The park will feature two sections, one for smaller dogs and the other for medium to large dogs. Both sections will have their own entrances. The entrance will be locked with swipe-card access. The cards will be for sale, but are not yet available.
The park will also have memorial bricks that can be purchased at Meier’s store, Pawsitively Scrumptious, located at 307 B. Highway 90 W, or through the Main Street Crestview Association.
