CRESTVIEW — Ida Faye Powell has plenty of experience with Crestview Rehabilitation Center.
Powell spent 21 days at the center doing therapy after she broke her shoulder. Years prior to Powell’s own stay, her mother-in-law spent time at the rehab center.
On Friday, Powell gave back to the place that has helped her family in the form of $250. The donation came with one stipulation: It had to be used for bingo prizes.
“I saw how much my mother-in-law loved playing bingo,” Powell said. “She especially loved when her prize was money. That was what she always wanted.”
The center eventually quit using money for prizes, until Powell came up with an idea.
“I asked them if they would take a donation and they said they would,” Powell said.
Powell then turned to Alpha Beta Upsilon, a local chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, for assistance. Powell is a former president of the chapter and currently serves as the corresponding secretary.
“We’re a service organization,” Powell said. “We have a yearly yard sale in October. That’s the only thing we use to raise money. So the money came from what we made there and dues that we pay.”
Susan Brannon, activities director at the rehab center, was thrilled by the donation.
“Bingo is a big thing here,” Brannon said. “It means a lot to us. Now they (residents) get to play more often and receive bigger prizes.”
