New coronavirus cases increased 9.4% in Florida in the week ending Sunday as the state added 11,048 cases. The previous week had 10,095 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Florida ranked sixth among the states where coronavirus was spreading the fastest on a per-person basis, a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the latest week coronavirus cases in the United States increased 4% from the week before, with 83,096 cases reported. With 6.45% of the country's population, Florida had 13.3% of the country's cases in the last week. Across the country, 23 states had more cases in the latest week than they did in the week before.
Within Florida, the worst weekly outbreaks on a per-person basis were in Jackson, Gulf and St. Johns counties. Adding the most new cases overall were Miami-Dade County, with 2,036 cases; Broward County, with 1,087 cases; and Duval County, with 812. Weekly case counts rose in 39 counties from the previous week. The worst increases from the prior week's pace were in Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Duval counties.
Okaloosa County reported 108 cases in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 71 cases. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 21,195 cases and 367 deaths.
Walton County reported 16 cases in the latest week. A week earlier, it had reported 24 cases. Throughout the pandemic it has reported 8,002 cases and 89 deaths.

Florida ranked 22nd among states in share of people receiving at least one shot, with 53.2% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 54%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.
In the week ending Sunday, Florida reported administering another 285,031 vaccine doses, including 132,493 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 758,850 vaccine doses, including 284,084 first doses. In all, Florida reported it has administered 20,762,378 total doses.
Across Florida, cases fell in 25 counties, with the best declines in Hillsborough, Orange and Pasco counties.
In Florida, 217 people were reported dead of COVID-19 in the week ending Sunday. In the week before that, 290 people were were reported dead.
A total of 2,365,464 people in Florida have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 37,772 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States 33,624,983 people have tested positive and 603,966 people have died.
