CRESTVIEW — Three North Okaloosa County high school seniors each received a $1,000 scholarship from the Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce.
The scholarships, named for former Crestview mayor and chamber president Foy Shaw, went to Crestview High School’s Kelsey Luckett, Baker School’s Anastasia Scott and Laurel Hill School’s Tanner Williams.
“I’m so honored they chose me,” Anastasia said, adding she will apply the money toward tuition at the University of West Florida, where she plans to study psychology.
Tanner said he has not yet chosen a school, whether a college or a vocational school, but he definitely wants to study culinary arts. Dabbling in the kitchen is his favorite activity, he said.
“I can cook just about anything,” Tanner said, adding he especially likes creating cakes and pastries.
Kelsey has been dual enrolled at Northwest Florida State College and will complete her associate’s degree this summer before heading to UWF to study health, leisure and exercise sciences.
“I want to go into pediatric physical therapy,” she said.
Having volunteered at the chamber of commerce’s monthly breakfast meetings through Crestview High’s SSTRIDE — Science Students Together Reaching Instructional Diversity and Excellence — program, Kelsey said she appreciates her scholarship’s namesake.
“I really am honored receiving a scholarship that is in Mr. Foy Shaw’s name,” she said.
Scholarship Committee chairman Craig Shaw, son of the scholarship’s namesake, said his father was a strong supporter of education and would’ve been proud of this year’s scholarship recipients.
Donations toward the 2017 Foy Shaw Scholarships are welcome, scholarship committee chairman Craig Shaw said. Send money to the Crestview Area Chamber of Commerce, 1447 Commerce Drive, Crestview 32539-6944. Information: 682-3212
