CRESTVIEW — Antioch Elementary School's media center had a quilt on display for Black History Month in February.
Michael Creel, a third grade teacher at the school, shared the heirloom item created by his mother, Theresa Creel.
She based the quilt on different patterns used as symbols for travelers on the Underground Railroad. Each pattern has a specific meaning that would be interpreted by runaway slaves to assist them in their escape to the North.
She knew that many students learn about the Underground Railroad and she was inspired to design a quilt that showed samples of these patterns that would have been common during that time. Next to the quilt is a poster, which explains the meaning of each symbol on the quilt.
An avid quilter, Theresa Creel learned the the skill from her aunt when she was seven years old.
