Shoal River student named All State first bassist chair

Lucas Kornegay

Lucas Kornegay, a Shoal River Middle School seventh-grader, is making strides in the music world.

He placed first chair, principal bassist, during the Florida Music Educators Association's Jan. 14 All State reseating audition.

All State groups performed in concert during the Jan. 13-16 FMEA conference at the Tampa Convention Center, according to FMEA's website.

In November, Lucas — the son of Pell and Angela Kornegay — learned that he was the only string player north of Tallahassee who made the All State Orchestra.

Angela said, "Lucas couldn't have done this well without the guidance of several music educators … namely Liz Aylor, director of Sinfonia Youth Orchestra; Melanie Punter, associate professor of bass studies from Florida State University; Tom Latenser from Northwest Florida State College; and SRMS music director Kim Whaley."
