Baker JROTC cadets closer to state competition

Baker School Junior ROTC cadets M.E. Cates, Isaac Kimbrell, Dakoda Williams and Logan Thompson helped raise nearly $1,000 by wrapping gifts for donations outside the Crestview Wal-Mart.

CRESTVIEW — Baker School's Junior ROTC is almost $1,000 closer to participating in a state Raider competition.

A group of the school’s cadets wrapped customers’ Christmas gifts for donations Monday and Wednesday outside the store’s entrance.

“This will help us go to state competition in Orlando,” said the unit’s commander, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Joe Nunley. During November's regional competition at Vernon High School, Baker's boys and girls teams won first place and earned the opportunity to represent the school in the February statewide, physical fitness contest.

As for the cadets' gift-wrapping skills, customers seemed pleased.

“They’re real pretty,” shopper Mary Bachman said.
