On New Year's Eve, some were watching the ball drop in New York City on TV or watching a local fireworks display.
But in hospital rooms across Okaloosa County, new moms were ringing in 2018 with their babies.
At 12:24 a.m., Kaylah Schoenstein gave birth to 7-pound, 7-ounce, 20 1/2-inch Kaylani Jazlyn Toro at Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast in Miramar Beach. The girl was the first child for the Shalimar woman.
Kaylani was due Dec. 28, but waited it out to be the first New Year's baby at the hospital. Kaylah said she thought her daughter would either be a Christmas or New Year's baby. She was happy for the latter.
"This way she can still enjoy Christmas," Kaylah said with a laugh.
At Fort Walton Beach Medical Center, the first birth of the New Year came in doubles with a set of twins born at 2:47 and 2:48 a.m. Their mom did not want to be interviewed.
And at North Okaloosa Medical Center in Crestview, Nena Woodbury welcomed her second son into the world at 8:26 a.m. by C section.
"He was due on Jan. 4," Nena said on the phone from her hospital room. "He's a little miracle baby since the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck and we had to do a C section."
Nolan came in weighing 7 pounds, 7 ounces and was 20 3/4 inches long. Nena said he's a "perfect baby."
"He doesn't really cry or anything, just like my first son," she said.
"This is definitely a New Year's to remember."
