FORT WALTON BEACH— The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office reportedly received a record amount of unused prescription drugs during a recent drive.
Residents disposed of more than 450 pounds of unused, expired or unwanted prescription medications for destruction during the Prescription Drug Take Back Initiative April 27. Officers collected approximately 161 pounds of drugs in April 2012.
Officers set up drive-through tent collection sites in area Wal-Mart parking lots.
Okaloosa County was the second largest contributor in Northwest Florida, with Escambia County being the largest, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The OCSO holds such drives twice annually as part of a nationwide initiative of local law enforcement agencies and the DEA.
