CRESTVIEW — Southside Center’s classes are getting wet, splashing around and having fun as Water Day activities begun last week pick up this week.
The school on Thursday kicked off Water Day activities for voluntary pre-kindergarten and pre-k disabilities program students.
"I got to slide down the (water) slide," Koah Kiick, 4, said. He and his classmates in Debra Barton's class enjoyed an hour with the inflatable playground.
"They have been asking about this day for a while now," said Barton, who teaches pre-k students with disabilities. "It’s a good way to finish our studies on water and water safety."
That meant playing on an inflatable water slide and enjoying other water contraptions, including a large, spraying beach ball.
Barton sent pool safety handouts home before the big day.
Christian Davenport, 4, knew what he had to do before he went swimming.
"You have to learn to swim," he said. "You need to have a buddy (with you) … and walk around the pool (don't run)."
Other useful tips for students included ensuring an adult was close when swimming and avoiding the water during storms.
Teaching students water safety is necessary, Barton said.
"It’s a basic thing you teach your children so that there are no accidents," she said.
