CRESTVIEW — Customers again browsed stalls of produce, baked goods, candles, jams and jellies at the corner of Woodruff Avenue and Main Street as the location once more hosted a local farmers market.
In the 1970s and ’80s, after the gas station formerly on the site closed down, farmers would bring their produce in from the surrounding area and sell it fresh to downtown shoppers in what became known as the Curb Market.
Today, the renovated location houses the Main Street Land Title Company and the law office of Nathan Boyles, who offers space at the weekly Friday market without charge.
“Anybody who grows anything” — including backyard gardeners — may sell produce at the market, Boyles said. "We want to give our local farmers a place to sell what they grow.”
On its first day, the market drew Megan Bowersox and Amber McClellan, who as the "Nerdie Birdies," operate a vegan bakery.
"We're really enjoying it," McClellan said. "We've completely sold out of our granola."
Nearby, Crestview residents Willie and Pam Scott browsed homemade candles, jams and fresh eggs at Laurel Hill vendor Marthy Lundy's stall. The couple said they had just been to lunch and were walking off their meal as they examined the wares.
Next they joined a young couple with an infant who stopped to sniff candles offered by Nikki and Ty Francisco in their first public sales effort.
"We were so happy to get this opportunity," Nikki Francisco said. "We're new at this."
"It's been really good traffic for the first day," Main Street Land and Title's Cheryl Purvines said. "We'd like to have more farmers, though."
