CRESTVIEW — Mayor David Cadle said he wanted to recognize the public service of one of his predecessors, late Mayor Ted Mathis.
Mathis, who died in September 2013, was represented at Monday's City Council meeting by his wife, Joyce, their two daughters and a granddaughter for the reading of a commemorative resolution.
"The city of Crestview, Florida, has lost the service of a worthy mentor," Cadle said. Also honoring Mathis was former city clerk Ed Neal and former councilman Ted Stephens; both served under Mathis during his November 1987 to April 1995 administration.
Council President Robyn Helt thanked Joyce Mathis for her support, saying she understood the challenges a spouse faces when her husband is in public service.
"He was the one who started the Concerned Citizens group," resident Mae Retha Coleman said. "There are great things I can say about Mayor Mathis. He was a great leader for all the people."
