School supplies needed for Back to School Bash

CRESTVIEW — Calvary United volunteers are collecting school supplies today from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Walmart Supercenter.

Two vans, provided by Hub City Ford, will be parked beside each store entrance to receive donations for the church's Aug. 15 Back to School Bash.

The main event — set for 6-9 p.m. at Old Spanish Trail Park — includes the school supplies distribution, free food, a fire truck and police car on display, and giveaways such as a boy's and girl's bike, an iPad and more.

"We're giving away a lot of stuff," Riky Edwards, a Calvary United church member, said, "and if you're not there, you're going to miss out on a lot of things at the bash."

The bash will also feature presentations by Gordon Martial Arts, Palmer's ATA Taekwondo, and Calvary's sign language team, among others.

One of Edwards' favorite parts is a "Fear Factor"-style contest, which usually involves eating more unusual foods than your competitors.

"Kids love it!" Edwards said.

But before all of those festivities take place, Calvary volunteers need more school supplies because that's the main reason for the bash.

So far, the group hasn't received many donations, Edwards said.

People who miss the Wal-Mart supplies drive may still donate. Just call Edwards at 682-1776.
