CRESTVIEW — Crestview Police officers have charged a 16-year-old as a suspect in the Thanksgiving eve shooting of a Main Street jewelry store window.
According to a CPD media release, police apprehended Jeremiah Nathaniel Haynes-Ashton in Twin Hills Park and charged him with felony criminal mischief with damage greater than $1,000 for the 11:30 p.m. Nov. 21 incident. It was caught on security video outside the targeted Main Street business, Joey the Jeweler.
"Haynes-Ashton is observed in the video bicycling north on Main Street with two accomplices, who then swerve east on Woodruff Avenue, and stop outside the jewelry shop’s side window. The video shows the two other boys taking selfies in front of the window, on which the store projects a Christmas video," the release stated.
“The defendant is then observed producing a dark in color handgun that he aims at the window from approximately 15 feet away and fires approximately four metal BB projectiles into the window … In the security video, the other two boys are seen jumping in apparent surprise when the projectiles strike the window," the release stated. The trio allegedly rode off and continued up Main Street.
The vandalism caused approximately $5,000 in damage to the custom double-pane window.
"The suspect was positively identified by a Crestview Police investigator who said he also recognized Mr. Haynes-Ashton’s distinctive black mountain bike, which the teen was frequently seen riding around town," the media release stated.
Police took Haynes-Ashton to the Department of Juvenile Detention after his arrest.
