Food bank, Wal-Mart team up for Defeat Hunger Bowl

Bay Area Food Bank is teaming up with Wal-Mart to launch a different kind of bowl this football season.

With Jacksonville running back Denard Robinson as the face of the Florida campaign, Wal-Mart is kicking off the second annual Defeat Hunger Bowl to collect food and raise awareness for those struggling with hunger.

From Jan. 8 through Feb. 8, customers at the Crestview Wal-Mart can donate non-perishable food items or purchase pre-packaged food donation bags for $5.

All donations will go directly to Bay Area Food Bank and the pantries and soup kitchens they support.

“After the holiday season ends, we typically see a drop in donations,” said Bay Area Food Bank’s Executive Director Dave Reaney. “With over 15 percent of households and 25 percent of children suffering from food insecurity in the Florida Panhandle, we cannot afford to slow food distribution to our neighbors in need.

"Events like Defeat Hunger Bowl have a significant impact in helping to feed and bring awareness to the issue of hunger in our community.”

The event's corporate partners also include Kraft, Mondelez and Campbell’s.
