Band students earn more than $1 million in scholarships

CRESTVIEW— Fifteen members of Crestview High School’s band signed with various colleges Thursday morning; many students received music and academic scholarships, amounting to more than $1.3 million total.

This is the third year the band has held a college signing day event. Band Director Jody Dunn said that athletes had their signing days but other groups didn’t, so he decided to start holding this celebration for students in the band.

“Anytime we can celebrate kids, it’s the thing to do,” Dunn said.

Here are the students recognized and their plans:

  • Colby Walker is attending Mississippi State University on an engineering scholarship. Colby plans on studying aeronautical engineering.
  • Brent Mynard is attending Northwest Florida State College on a music scholarship. Brent said he is thinking of studying engineering.
  • Cameron Wakeland is attending the University of West Florida on a full ride from academic scholarships, including the John C. Pace Junior Honor Scholarship. Cameron plans on studying environmental science.
  • Chloѐ Berkley is attending the University of Florida. Chloѐ plans on studying biology and music.
  • Kaitlin Cabrillas is attending the University of West Florida. Kaitlin plans on studying nursing and music.
  • Joanna McMillan is attending the University of Southern Mississippi on academic scholarships. Joanna received the Service Award from the university and plans on studying music education or music performance.
  • Ethan Mitchell is attending the University of Southern Mississippi on a full ride scholarship for music. Ethan also received the Service Award from the university and plans on studying music.
  • Michael Gaillard is attending Northwest Florida State College on a community service scholarship through the Chamber of Commerce. Michael plans on studying graphic design.
  • Alyssa Dickson is attending Troy University on a full ride from academic scholarships. Alyssa plans on studying biomedical science or nursing.
  • Alyssa Schlipp is attending the University of Louisiana at Lafayette on academic scholarships for education and housing. Alyssa plans on studying psychology.
  • Brenden Mears is attending the University of Florida on Bright Futures scholarships. Brenden plans on studying electrical engineering.
  • Quinn Stegner is attending Auburn University on the Presidential Scholarship and scholarships for the university’s college of science and mathematics. Quinn plans on studying biochemical sciences.
  • Jacob Cyrus is attending Florida State University on the University Freshman Scholarship. Jacob plans on studying political science and international affairs.
  • Hannah Mack is attending Northwest Florida State College on an AMVETS scholarship and a scholarship from CHELCO. Hannah plans on studying elementary education.
  • Tyler Goldsworthy is attending the University of West Florida on Bright Futures scholarships. Tyler plans on studying law and biology.
