Crestview man charged with attempted murder following shooting

CRESTVIEW — A Crestview man faces charges of attempted murder, resisting arrest with violence, making threats of violence to a public official, and two counts of child abuse.

The Crestview Police Department arrested James A. Smith, 33, following a shooting that occurred around 10:55 p.m. last night on Majestic Drive.

Police received area residents’ 911 call of shots being fired. When officers arrived on the scene, they contacted the 42-year-old female victim, who had been shot in the right shoulder area.

Officers detained Smith, who allegedly became combative with them and made threats of violence against them as they attempted to render first aid to the victim.

Police said they quickly determined that James Smith was the shooter.

The victim was flown by helicopter to a Pensacola hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Smith was delivered into the custody of the Okaloosa County Jail.

Children were present during the shooting, resulting in the child abuse charge.

The names of the victim and children involved have been intentionally omitted from this report.
