CRESTVIEW — If you keep a gun in your car, lock the doors. That’s the lesson from a string of gun thefts in Okaloosa County.
Since June 26, more than a half-dozen firearms reportedly have been stolen from unlocked cars in Okaloosa County. Now, the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to avoid leaving a weapon in an unlocked car.
The agency issued a news release last year on the problem after 71 guns were reported stolen between August 2014 and August 2015, with the vast majority from cars left unlocked.
About 90 percent of the OCSO’s reported car burglaries during that time frame were to unsecured vehicles.
