
DEFUNIAK SPRINGS — The Florida Highway Patrol arrested the driver of a vehicle involved in a June 26 hit and run that killed a pedestrian.
According to an FHP media release, James Schofield, 34, of DeFuniak Springs, was driving a 1995 Sierra GMC in the eastbound Lane of County Road 1084, just east of Bryan Road, when it collided with pedestrian Gary Dijon McKee, 50, of DeFuniak Springs, in the roadway. McKee died at the scene due to injuries sustained in the collision.

The release stated that Schofield subsequently fled the scene of the crash, and he and his passenger, Christina Garrett, 25, of Laurel Hill, were located after an exhaustive search for them and the GMC due to a disturbance call handled by the Walton County Sheriff's Office.
According to the release, a homicide investigator was able to obtain confessions from Schofield and Garrett, and investigators located their vehicle in a hay barn at another location.
Schofield is booked in the Walton County Jail on a $27,000 bond.
