DEFUNIAK SPRINGS — Choctawhatchee Electrical Cooperative is warning Crestview and Northwest Florida residents about criminals posing as power company employees.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office was called about a recent burglary during which intruders posed as employees from “the local power company” to conduct the crime.
The Walton County Sheriff’s Department has also received calls about similar scammers posing as power companies.
CHELCO employees will always be identifiable and will never refuse to provide identification, a spokesperson said.
THREE WAYS TO ID A CHELCO EMPLOYEE:
1. They will be in a white vehicle with the vehicle number near each door and CHELCO logos on each side.
2. Field employees, such as linemen or energy auditors, will wear a CHELCO uniform shirt or clothing with a CHELCO logo.
3. All CHELCO employees have a CHELCO employee ID card with photo.
Residents doubting an employee's identity may call CHELCO at 850-892-2111 to verify an employee’s location.
