Cyclist injured near Shoal River east of Crestview

CRESTVIEW — A bicyclist is injured after a vehicle struck him just east of the Shoal River near Killingsworth Crossroads on U.S. Highway 90.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s office received an 8:18 a.m. call from a passing motorist that a Chevrolet truck hit the biker, Justin John Peczkowski, 28, of Somerville, Massachusetts.

Okaloosa EMS transported Peczkowski, who was wearing a helmet, to North Okaloosa Medical Center, OCSO reported. His Trek bicycle sustained $2,500 in damages.

The Florida Highway Patrol, which is handling the investigation, said Peczkowski suffered "serious" injuries when Laurel Hill resident Lex Robert Morrill II, 41, struck the rear of his bicycle while both vehicles were traveling east.

"The bicyclist was thrown from the bicycle and landed on the south shoulder of U.S. Highway 90," the accident report stated.

Morrill was charged with failing to maintain a proper distance when overtaking and passing a bicyclist. His 2005 pickup truck sustained an estimated $500 in damages.
