BAKER — The dress rehearsals are over for Baker School’s football team. Friday night when the Gators travel to Bonifay to take on Holmes County the game counts.

Baker is coming off a 13-6 win over Jay in last week’s Kickoff Classic. The Blue Devils lost to the Episcopal School of Jacksonville 21-0.

Gator Coach Matt Brunson is please with what he saw from his team against Jay.

“First of all I thought our kids gave great effort,” he said. “I think we played with pretty good pad level. Over all I think we were physical.

“I felt we did a good job at the line of scrimmage. As we keep tweaking stuff I think this is going to be a fun group to watch.”

Holmes County is led by first-year coach Kevin Womble. Womble has installed a Wing-T offense, which could make things interesting for the Gators.

“The run a misdirection offense and we have to get dialed in defensively and be disciplined and I think we have a good shot of stopping them,” Brunson said. “I think our guys have a great chance (of stopping the Blue Devils) because they are great kids and they are disciplined.

“It’s all about discipline, reading  your keys and having your eyes in the right place and understanding where your run pits (lanes) are. That’s the main thing to stopping the Wing-T.”

Rain, that was heavy at times in Jay, didn’t allow Baker to use much of its offensive package, but Brunson is confident the Gators will be able execute the offense as needed on Friday.

“The weather plays into on how much we will be spread,” he said. “We can do both. We can go fast or we can slow it down.”

Fast or slow, Brunson is confident the Gators will be ready Friday night.
