CRESTVIEW – A powerful Tallahassee Godby team spoiled Crestview’s Homecoming celebration at Jack Foster Stadium on Friday as the Cougars rolled to a 49-14 win over the Bulldogs.
Godby (4-0) rolled up 425 yards in total offense while holding Crestview to just 195 yards in total offense and two passing yards.
The Cougars used a pair of big plays in the first quarter to jump to a 14-0 lead that they would never relinquish.
The first big play was a 67-yard touchdown pass from T.J. Bradwell to Wade Phillip Tryton Johnson’s extra point made it 7-0 and the Cougars were off and running with 5:44 left in the period. The touchdown was set up by a fumble by Crestview’s Dakota Dean.
With 2:46 left in the first quarter Bradwell hit Jaylen Heyward with a 53-yard touchdown pass.
While Godby was able to convert on turnovers by the Bulldogs in the first quarter Crestview wasn’t able to capitalize on apiary of Godby miscues.
Tyler Henderson ended Godby’s second possession of the night when he intercepted a Bradwell pass but the Bulldogs were unable to make the Cougars pay for the mistake. On the first play of the second quarter Jalynne Robinson recovered a Cougar fumble, but once again Crestview was unable to capitalize on the miscue.
The Bulldogs (2-3) suffered a bigger loss on the play though when Henderson reinjured his right ankle and was done for the game.
Things finally bounced Crestview’s way in the second quarter as Will Jefferies recovered a Godby fumble at the Cougar 19-yard line.
Two runs by Micah Reed covered the distance for the touchdown as Crestview pulled to within a touchdown of Godby with 7:44 left in the half.
Godby picked up a pair of touchdown runs in the final four minutes of the second quarter to push the lead to 28-7 at the break.
Kenny Young scored on a 15-yard run with 3:49 in the half. After a quick three-and-out by Crestview Khadid Thomas, who led the Cougars with 116 yards on 11 carries, scored from a yard out.
The extended half time ceremonies seemed to give new life to the Bulldogs as Crestview took the opening drive of the third quarter and marched 66 yards on 10 plays for a touchdown. Reed and Robinson did all of the work on the ground with Reed carrying the ball eight times for 53 yards. Reed scored on a 2-yard run with 8:13 left in the third quarter.
That was the final time the Bulldogs found the end zone.
The Cougars picked up a 6-yard touchdown run for Tim Longmire with 4:38 left in the third.
Godby scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. With 10:13 left in the quarter, Bradwell found Earl Calloway with a 9-yard touchdown pass.
Thomas scored the final Godby touchdown on 10-yard interception return of a Dakota Davis pass with 2:59 left in the game.
Reed led the Bulldogs with 115 yards rushing on 27 carries. Dean and Robinson each had 31 yards rushing for Crestview as the Bulldogs were playing without Emmanuel Reed who was recovering from a foot injury suffered against Catholic.
Crestview opens District 2-6A play Friday hosting Fort Walton Beach.
