CRESTVIEW — Bob Sikes Elementary School parents saw their students’ education in action Thursday night during Science Night in the school cafeteria.
Daisy Spencer, 8, showed her great-grandfather, Allen Shoaf, her project on poster board titled "The Colors of Density.” She and her second-grade classmates mixed several household liquids — including dish soap, vegetable oil and rubbing alcohol — to see if they mixed or separated. The substances layered themselves based on their density, the experiment stated. The project required her to log results.
"We had to come up with a question and hypothesis," Daisy said.
Seeing the project was a treat, Shoal said.
"We try to encourage her in all of her school work," he said.
Staff from Fort Walton Beach’s Emerald Coast Science Center performed experiments that included constructing flying contraptions using just paper strips and drinking straws.
Joy Stewart, who attended her first Science Night with her 6-year-old son, Calvin, said she was impressed.
"It was very informative," she said. "The presentations were interesting enough to keep the kids interested."
"This is just real neat that they can do this," said Bobby Feller, who attended with his 7-year-old daughter, Mayson.
The school annually presents four Parent Nights that involve reading, math, writing and science, Principal Vicky Hayden said.
Feller said Since Night, for him, was a trip down memory lane.
"You look through the (cafeteria) and you say, “Oh yeah, I remember that," he said.
