CRESTVIEW — First National Bank of Crestview has recognized four children for their homemade piggy bank entries in this year’s Piggy Bank Pageant.
Each winner received a $25 check, a certificate, and a gift bag with an activity book, a pencil bag and a plastic piggy bank. Okaloosa Saves, the University of Florida extension office’s nonprofit organization that teaches residents how to build wealth, displayed the creations during its Eco-Nomic Living Expo last monthin Fort Walton Beach.
Theron Lasher, 9, and his brother, Orlan, 6, made their piggy banks from recycled plastic bottles, coffee filters and cardboard. Earlier, Orlan won $50 for participating in similar pageant with Okaloosa Saves,
Elijiah Thiessen, 8, and his sister Sophie, 7, made their piggy banks from clay modeling kits.
"We had to bake it in an oven," Elijiah said on Tuesday during an awards presentation at the bank.
The activity has helped the siblings learn to save money, their parents, Tina and Kevin, said.
Saving can pay off in the end, Theron said.
"It’s important in case you want to buy a house or something," he said.
