JAY — Led by Cassidy Anderson and Dylan Scott, the Baker School track and field team made a strong showing at Tuesday’s District 1-1A meet.

Anderson won the long jump, the triple jump, the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter run, leading the Lady Gators to a second-place finish behind Pensacola Christian Academy. Pensacola Christian had 194 points to Baker’s 171.

Scott took first place in the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200 as the Baker boys finished in third place with 105.5 behind Pensacola Christian, with 161.5 points, and Jay, with 136.5 points.

Baker also had first-place finishes from Eileen Brown in the girls shot put, Stephen Shaw in the boys triple jump and Dylan Wadsworth in the boys 300-meter hurdles.

The Gators received a big blow when sprinter Izayaih Thomas, undefeated in the boys 100- and 200-meter dashes, pulled a hamstring in the 100-meter dash.

Gator coach David Oglesby praised his athletes’ efforts.

“I think all of them performed the best they can,” he said. “I was real proud of them. Everybody came out and, I think, had their A game.

“They ran the best they could. The success is a tribute to all of these kids. They come to practice and they work hard.”

Baker’s track team has been in a rebuilding year of sorts this season after Morgan Jones, state champion in the girls discus, and Ivory Smith, boys 400-meter champion, graduated last spring.

“We had some kids step up this year that decided they wanted to run,” Oglesby said. “We had to revamp it, but last year we were second and second at district as well, and then we went to regionals and finished second at regionals.

“We are placing number one in a lot of these races. And then the first-place team here doesn’t necessarily have the best first-place athletes because you are scoring all the way to eighth (place for team standings). So when you go to regionals (because only the top four from each district event can advance) it’s a different game.”

The following is a list of Gators who finished in the top four in their events. They will compete in Region 1-1A meet Thursday at Bishop Snyder High School in Jacksonville.
