Public asked to avoid Brookmeade Drive, hospital area in Crestview

Crestview Police Department officers and North Okaloosa Sheriff's Office deputies close off Brookmeade Drive as police search nearby woods for a possible armed suspect Thursday afternoon.

CRESTVIEW — The Crestview Police Department is asking the public to avoid Brookmeade Drive and other areas around the North Okaloosa Medical Center as officers search for a possibly armed suspect in the area, officials said.

Both the hospital and a nearby Childcare Network daycare center on Brookmeade Drive are in lockdown mode, police officer Sam Kimmons said.

Kimmons said law enforcement officers are with the children at the daycare and they are safe.

Riverside Elementary School and Shoal River Middle School were also locked down, though because it was an early release day, no students were on the shared campus.

Crestview Police Department spokesman Lt. Andrew Schneider said police were searching for the suspect in the woods behind the Childcare Network.

No further details were available.
