CHELCO members report scams

Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative has received reports that businesses and people in its service area are receiving calls threatening disconnection for non-payment of utility bills.

In some cases, callers have told members there is a problem with the electric meter that could result in a fire if payment for a replacement meter is not made immediately.

Anyone receiving such a call should be aware that the caller is not a representative of CHELCO. Such incidents should be reported to local law enforcement immediately. The utility's staff never requests or takes credit card information over the phone.

CHELCO is a not-for-profit electric distribution cooperative serving more than 49,000 accounts in Walton, Okaloosa, Holmes and Santa Rosa counties.
