BAKER — A Baker Gator football team riding a 13-game regular season winning streak has reason to be confident Friday night when it travels to Bonifay to take on Holmes County.
But Gator Coach Matt Brunson doesn’t have to mention the streak to motivate the team.
“Our guys love to compete and they love to win,” he said. “Each Friday night they are hungry for victory. At the same time, we haven’t mentioned 13 regular season games because we would like to get in that post season tournament and make some noise in that.
“That’s what’s important to us.”
Brunson thinks the Blue Devils will be another good test for the 2-0 Gators, who are coming off an impressive 21-7 win over Sneads.
“Bonifay (Holmes County) has got a lot of tough football players,” he said. “They’ve played in a few state championship games in the past. They had a great team two years ago.
“Brad Johnson (Holmes County coach) was one of my assistants down at Vernon and he does a great job. He’s got a very able tailback and they’ve got an offensive system about like we are running.”
The big difference between the teams is the number of players Baker will use and how fast the Gators play, Brunson said.
“They are going to run an option offense out of the shotgun and try to spread us out,” he said. “They are going to play 4-3 defense. They are playing about 15 guys, but we are going to play about 30 guys.
“They don’t work at as fast a tempo, but they run a lot of similar plays.”
