Florida’s Move Over Law now protects utility and sanitation vehicles.
Motorists must move over one lane when law enforcement, emergency vehicles, utility vehicles, sanitation vehicles or tow trucks are performing roadside duties.
In situations where changing lanes is unsafe or the driver is traveling on a two-lane road, speed must be reduced to 20 miles per hour less than the posted speed limit.
If the posted speed limit is 20 miles per hour or less, motorists are required to slow down to a speed of 5 miles per hour.
“I am pleased to see this law amended to include utility workers as well as other selected groups,” CHELCO Vice President of Operations Donny Fugate said. “Our people work with high voltages and in difficult conditions, so anything we can do to make it safer for them is a step in the right direction.”
Violating the Move Over law can result in a fine and points against the driver’s license.
