CRESTVIEW — Former Baker School basketball star Chad Donley is on the move again.
Donley will enroll at Morehead State, in Morehead, Ky., this fall. There, he will join another Baker grad, B.J. Ellis, an assistant coach for the Eagles.
Donley, a 2010 Baker graduate, spent the first two years of his college career at Northwest Florida State College, where he redshirted as a freshman. He’s been at Liberty University, in Lynchburg, Va., the last two years where he was a member of the Flames’ team that made the 2013 NCAA tournament.
Donley, who will attend Morehead as a graduate student in sports management, is looking forward to the fresh start and the opportunity to play for Ellis.
“Liberty wasn’t a very good situation for me basketballwise to play for my full potential,” he said. “I contacted B.J. Ellis after I decided to transfer and him and I have had a really good relationship for a while now.
“He just brought me up there with him and it will be a good opportunity for me. I’m graduating and I’ll be able to play right away.”
Donley said he looked at some other teams before deciding to make the move to Morehead. Morehead’s recent success played a big part in his decision.
“I wanted to go somewhere that I could be a part of a winning program,” he said. “Coach (Sean) Woods (Morehead’s head coach) has established that there now.”
Donley said Morehead will use him off the bench as a shooting guard and defender. And while Woods and Ellis didn’t make him any promises about playing time, Donley was told he will be given a fair shot at working his way into the lineup.
Donley leaves Liberty with good memories, but he’s not looking back.
“Over all it was a good experience,” he said. “I learned a lot from my coaches and teammates there.
“Things just didn’t work out there the way I hoped they would.”
