'IT'S A HOBBY' Highway flea market attracts Northwest Florida residents

Baker resident Dave Hinson, left, accepts money from Gulf County resident Donald Rhames in exchange for an electrical drill on Friday during last weekend’s Flea Across Florida yard sale. Hinson, along with several other vendors, sold goods along U.S. Highway 90.

CRESTVIEW — Dave Hinson enjoys selling items he collected from storage locker and estate auctions: anything from DVDs to shoes and tools.

Over the weekend, the Baker resident, along with other vendors, had the chance to do so along U.S. Highway 90 during the Flea across Florida yard sale. The twice-annual event took place in several counties on the Florida Panhandle, from Live Oak to Pensacola.

For vendors, Crestview was a hot spot.

“There is a lot of traffic here,” Mossy Head resident Mike Porter, an auctioneer, said.

Porter, Hinson and a few other vendors brought their items to the corner of West James Lee Boulevard and Coleman Street.

It is a lot of work to pack, store and move the items, but "it’s a hobby,” Hinson said.

And when it comes to strategy, Mike with his wife, Jenny have it all figured out.

“We don’t sell on Saturday because there is so much competition,” he said. “There is not as much sellers (on Friday) as there will be on (Saturday). Friday is the best time to sell and Saturday is the best time to buy.”

In addition to bringing vendors to Crestview, the yard sale attracts shoppers outside the city.

Ann Barnhill, who enjoys crafting, visited Crestview from Milton, hoping to find items she could turn into gifts for family and friends.

Barnhill planned to visit yard sales along Highway 90, stopping in Tallahassee and Live Oak along the way, but she wouldn't miss the Hub City's opportunities, she said.

“I always stop here in Crestview; I always find something here,” she said.
