Laurel Hill girls upend Baker

BAKER — Laurel Hill’s one-two punch of Cynthia Mason and Bridget Zessin was too much for Baker to overcome in girls basketball action Monday night.

Mason and Zessin combined for 24 points to lead the Hoboes to a 38-29 win over the Gators. Mason had 14 points and Zessin had 10.

Amanda Parisi came up big for Baker (1-3) in the loss scoring a game-high 19 points.

Parisi was in fact the sum whole of the Gator offense in the first half scoring all 10 of Baker’s points.

“We got into foul trouble early in the first half and we just didn’t execute tonight,” Gator Coach Jamie Kerrell said. “We didn’t the smart plays.

“We made some mistakes early and never could get going.”

The Hoboes (4-5) took control things early outscoring Baker 10-6 in the first quarter. Laurel Hill stretched the lead to 18-10 at the half.

The Gators tried to shoot their way back into the game in the third quarter when Jessica Black and Parisia hit back-to-back 3-pointers to close the Hobo advantage to 22-18.

A Zessin 3-pointer pushed Laurel Hill’s lead back to seven points and the Gators never seriously threatened the rest of the way.

“If hadn’t made so many silly mistakes and missed so many easy shots we could have put the game away early,” Hobo Coach Scott Varnum said. “Sometimes the ball wouldn’t go in the basket.

“It was a good win for us tonight. We’ve won three out of our last four games so we are getting better.”
