CRESTVIEW — Austin Armstrong won't need a lot of introductions next fall when he arrives at Jefferson Davis Community College in Brewton, Ala.
The Crestview High School baseball team's four-year starter at catcher is the fifth Bulldog in the last two seasons, and the third this year, to sign with Jefferson Davis.
Armstrong announced his decision Monday during a signing ceremony in the CHS gym.
The opportunity to continue playing with his friends played a big part in his decision, he said.
"It's just a great feeling that I know what to expect up there and I know we know how to play the game together," he said.
"He's one of the best I've had," Bulldog Coach Tim Gillis said. He's a great receiver. His numbers, as far as throwing out base runners, is tremendous."
Armstrong threw out 68 percent of runners trying to steal last year, Gillis said. This year, he threw out 50 percent of those trying to steal — still well above average.
"A lot of people just don't run on him anymore," Gillis said. "Austin finishes the deal with excellent throws and he does it in a lot of big-time situations.
The young athlete takes pride in his defense and appreciates his time playing for Gillis.
"It's very important knowing what I'm doing behind the plate," Armstrong said. "Playing for Coach Gillis the past four years has made me a very good player."
"He's a warrior," Gillis said. "He's a tough guy.
"He kind of personifies what we are."
