A mobile phone scam is resulting in charges upward of $19.95 plus additional costs per minute on victims' service bills, according to the Better Business Bureau.
Automated dialers blast thousands of random calls to mobile numbers gleaned from public listings or obtained fromblack market dealers but disconnect after one ring, a news release stated.
Scammers count on call recipients to notice the missed calls in call logs and return them. Charges typically appear on month-end statements as "premium services."
The BBB recommends the following for mobile phone owners:
•Never return calls to unfamiliar foreign numbers.
•Regularly check wireless statements and immediately report discrepancies.
•Add phone numbers to the National Do Not Call Registry and report violations.
