There's lots to do in Crestview

CRESTVIEW — From this month’s outdoor family movie to learning how to make quick delicious bread at home and discovering resources available for those living with disabilities, several upcoming activities are planned in Crestview.

Activities include the following:

•The Center for Independent Living’s Disability Resource Center and CareerSource Okaloosa/Walton’s mobile unit will provide free resource information for those living with disabilities and their healthcare providers 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 21 in the CareerSource mobile unit across from the Crestview Public Library, 1445 Commerce Drive.

•Family Movie Night, with the movie “A Dog’s Purpose,” is scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 24 at the Old Spanish Trail Park pavilion, Stillwell Boulevard, Crestview. Enter and park off Stillwell Boulevard. The free event starts with games, fun and food vendors at 6 p.m. and the film at 8 p.m. The event sponsor is Flex Fitness. It is a Mayor’s Cultural Series program.

•A Crestview All-Star Marching Unit community drum corps organizational and informational meeting is scheduled from 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 28 at the Crestview Community Center, 1446 Commerce Drive. Membership is free. It is part of the Mayor's Cultural Series and sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. Call 682-0789 for information.

•A free cooking class with supplies included is “Foil Packet Meals,” 5:30-7:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Crestview library. Learn to prepare versatile, healthy meals with minimal clean-up. Call 850-682-6524 to sign up.

•Doc Holliday’s Birthday Party, a free tribute to the Wild West gunslinger and dentist, will be presented by dentist Richard Thomas from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 14 at Warriors Hall, 201 Stillwell Blvd., Crestview. It kicks off with a "Run from the Law" 5K at 8 a.m. The presentation starts at 9 a.m. and includes food, historic displays, vintage cars, a western shoot-out reenactment, and special guest Ike Clanton. There will be best mustache and best time period costume contests. It is part of the Mayor’s Cultural Series.

Some recurring Crestview events are:

The Crestview Community Chorus rehearsal, 6:30-8 p.m. Mondays at Warriors Hall. The chorus is open to any vocalist who enjoys choral singing. Call the Parks and Recreation Department, 682-0789, for details.

The CareerSource Okaloosa/Walton mobile unit is available 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays across from the Crestview Public Library to provide job-hunting assistance.
