CRESTVIEW — Three first responders and a man pulled over for speeding were taken to the hospital for evaluation Tuesday after possibly being exposed to fentanyl, according to Florida Highway Patrol.
An FHP trooper who stopped a 2011 Lincoln for speeding on Ferdon Boulevard discovered several firearms, one of them reportedly stolen from the Crestview Police Department in 1990, the FHP press release said.
After discovering the firearms, the trooper also found a "multitude" of narcotics on the suspect, 27-year-old Aubrey Phillips from Baker, the FHP reported.
Emergency crews were called to the parking lot of the Dollar General on North Ferdon Boulevard to hose off Phillips, a FHP trooper, a Crestview police officer and an Okaloosa County EMS employee.
The press release said that after Phillips was evaluated at the hospital, he was later taken to the Okaloosa County Jail and booked on multiple charges: seven counts possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, two counts possession of controlled substance without a prescription, three counts of injury to law enforcement, firefighter and emergency medical crew member from exposure to narcotics, two counts possession of controlled substance (methamphetamines/fentanyl) and one count of possession of marijuana under 20 grams.
According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration website, fentanyl is a synthetic drug stronger than morphine.
The latest report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services state that overdoses of fentanyl have doubled each year from 2013 to 2016 making the synthetic drug one of the most deadly in America.
