Community Emergency Response Team sets training
CRESTVIEW — The North Okaloosa Community Emergency Response Team will conduct basic certification training. CERT members help emergency responders in the first 72 to 96 hours after a natural or human-made disaster.
Training hours are 7-10 p.m. Sept. 22; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 23; 1-4 p.m. Sept. 24; and 7-10 p.m. Sept. 29; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 30; and 1-4 p.m. Oct. 1. All meetings are at the Crestview Fire station No. 1 at 312 Woodruff Ave. N.
Attendance at all six sessions are required for certification. Training is free and available for any adult citizen age 18 or over. No special skills or experience are required.
Topics include first aid, disaster psychology, fire prevention and fire safety, disaster preparedness, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, and terrorism. Completion of the class does not create any obligation to become part of North Okaloosa CERT, but it does qualify the student to be part of any Community Emergency Response Team in the country.

Crestview workshop to focus on invasive species
MILTON — The Florida Forest Stewardship Program and the Six Rivers Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area are presenting a workshop for landowners.
Invasive Exotic Species and Control is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 28 at the University of Florida Extension office on Airport Road in Crestview.
Topics include herbicide labels, required personal protective equipment, applications techniques, herbicide resistance, modes of action and rotation.
There will also be a control update on terrestrial and aquatic invasive exotic plants, invasive species identification and look-alikes, established and new invasive exotic insects, and working with the Six Rivers CISMA.
Participants can learn about identifying and controlling cogongrass, Japanese climbing fern, privets and other non-native invasive species.
Attendees may earn pesticide applicator and forestry CEUs.

Act4Murder to present 'Killer in the Kitchen' in Crestview
CRESTVIEW — Act4Murder in September will present dinner theater featuring comedy, mystery and murder.
The professional comedy troupe's next North Okaloosa presentation is titled, "Killer in the Kitchen."
Seating begins 6 p.m. Sept. 30 at Samuel’s Roadhouse, 114 John King Road, Crestview. The show begins at 6:30 p.m.

Crestview motorcycle club's poker run to benefit American Cancer Society
CRESTVIEW — The Wingmen Motorcycle Club of Northwest Florida will have its third annual Emerald Coast Breast Cancer Awareness Poker Run. All proceeds go the American Cancer Society.
The event is open to the public. Motorcyclists, car and truck drivers are welcome to participate. It starts at 9 a.m. Oct. 14 at Hooters restaurant, 180 Cracker Barrel Drive, Crestview.
Cost is a $20 donation and $10 per extra hand. Cash prizes will be awarded and a 50/50 raffle is part of the fundraiser.
Participants will also travel to The Edge in Niceville from 10 a.m. to noon; Crestview Amvets Post 35 from 1-2 p.m.; and Crestview Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5450 from 3-4 p.m. The final stop is 4 p.m. to midnight at the Wingmen's club house at 160 Cayson Ave., Crestview, where Juke Joint Willie will provide live music.

Nurse submissions, donations requested for Eglin monument
CRESTVIEW — The Military Order of the Purple Heart and Northwest Florida State College are collecting information for a proposed nurses monument to be constructed at the US Air Force Armament Museum on Eglin.
The order and college are looking for one nurse to represent the Civilian Nurse of Today on the monument. The Nurses Monument Committee will select one civilian Registered Nurse, male or female, from submissions turned in by Oct. 31. The committee will announce the winner Nov. 16.
Three nurses featured on the monument are Florence Nightingale, Lt. Annie G. Fox, and 1st Lt. Sharon Lane. The information on each person includes their name, date of birth, date of death if deceased, and a history of their service, as listed below.
