On April 2, the Airport Security Unit was notified that an eight-month-old child had fallen out of a carrier worn by the mother and hit his head on the tile floor in the bathroom. Okaloosa County Sheriff deputy Richard Winkler made contact with the mother who was extremely distraught and fearful that her baby was seriously injured. Winkler examined the baby’s head and noticed a visible injury and summoned Eglin Air Force Base EMS. He then volunteered to care for the baby until the mother could gather her composure, which also allowed him to monitor the baby’s behavior until EMS arrived. The baby’s father arrived and EMS transported the baby to the hospital. Winkler remained with the mother at the airport to assist with the care of her other baby and help get the family’s luggage from the airline. Winkler’s caring personality and selfless actions were very appreciated by the family during this emotional time. He went above and beyond to assist them in their time of need and for his actions he was presented with the OCSO Certificate of Commendation.
