CRESTVIEW — Decorations on James and Merilea McCullough’s Crestview home are more than patriotic — they are a sign of solidarity for a fallen Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

The Travis Court home features a blue ribbon on the mailbox and a black-and-white American flag with a blue stripe down the middle, among other treatments.

“We put it up … to honor  the memory of Deputy Bill Myers,” the couple said in a Facebook message to the News Bulletin. “We hope it stands as a small token of love, respect and support for every single law enforcement officer that walks the thin blue line!”

A 33-year-old man shot Myers multiple times in the head and back on Sept. 22, 2015 in Shalimar. The 64-year-old returned to the service after retiring just so he could pay for his granddaughter to visit Disney World.

The thin blue line shows the relationship between law enforcement and everyone else. The top black stripe represents the public, the bottom black stripe represents criminals and the middle blue line represents forces that protect the public from violence.
