OCEAN SPRINGS — Coming off their second win of the season, the Crestview Bulldogs had a challenging beginning to their first road game.
The defense allowed the St. Martin Yellow Jackets to get a touchdown on their opening drive followed by a fumble to negate their own long offensive opening series.
However, momentum shifted with senior tackle Michael Robinson getting a sack for a safety, and junior wideout Keon Voison getting over 50 yards on the first of two touchdown receptions from senior quarterback Rusty Moorer.
Momentum continued to swing in both directions in the first half, with Crestview’s defense having difficulty containing St. Martin’s wideout, Kalem Reddix.
“Their number two is a really great player,” said coach Tim Hatten, referring to the senior Yellow Jacket. The score was 22-21, with Crestview leading at halftime.
Hatten had a solution for Reddix in the second half: “We got up in their face; played a little more physical with them,” Hatten said, mentioning putting double coverage on the St. Martin wideout, forcing their quarterback to spread the ball around his other receivers.
The Bulldogs outscored St. Martin 24-3 in the second half, with touchdown catches from Andrew Adkins and D’Marcus Purcell — who also got two interceptions on the day — and a rushing touchdown by Moorer.
Crestview came away with the win 46-24 despite 5 turnovers.
“You put 46 points on the board — that tells you how explosive you can be on offense,” Hatten said.
The Bulldogs come back home to the Hub City, where they will face the International School of Broward on Sept. 16.
